I created the visual style and subsequently cast creative vision for a series of sermons at Crossroads Church that looked at the seemingly innocuous habits that are kept in the dark. I worked closely with videographer Hermon Tekle in creation of a bumper video and teaser trailer. I gave creative direction while he shot and edited the film.

Brainstorming / Moodboard
I knew that this series needed to carry a darker tone, so I compiled a mood board that contained dark atmospheric lighting, silhouette, and aggressive or mysterious colors. I was inspired by the mystery and angst of these images. I found the use of a projector particularly interesting because of the way it could be used to partially reveal and partially obscure the subject. It carries a unique thematic weight to it in this context. In the final images, it takes on this feeling of being almost burned into the subject, like it has become part of who they are.

Sketching
Most every photo project like this starts with sketching. I knew that we wanted to use the symbolism of a box being used to hide something from the viewer, so I sketched different ideas for the composition and the lighting. I often try to emulate lighting as best I can through shading, and will break down possible lighting diagrams. Pages like this are also usually accompanied by frantic notes from my mind wandering at 2 a.m.

Photo Drafting
Possibly the most important step in the process (from a technical standpoint at-least) is actually testing lighting, practical effects, and post-process effect. Photos taken at this point are most often the digital equivalent of rough sketches. I worry less about precision and more about testing ideas.
We secured different types of boxes, and tried different colors and lighting set ups to see what worked best. This was especially important with the addition of the projector as another light source. The lack of fine tuning over the projector meant more intentionality was needed with the rest of the set.

The final image was the culmination of the full process.
